In the famous battle of the Teutoburg Forest, Germanic warriors in 9AD halted the spread of the Roman Empire in its advance north. This bloody encounter of two worlds is tragically interwoven with the destinies of three young people whose fate will lead them from innocence to guilt, from loyalty to betrayal, and from love to hate.

Barbarians | Official Trailer | Netflix

Watched the first episode and so far it was not bad, no Vikings of course but for a german show which usualy has no budget, it was not to shaby but the trailer makes it seem better than it is but kudos for them speaking real latin.

Re: Barbarians (2020)

I just don't get it... smile Why point to a historic event when you want to introduce stuff that's not historically accurate? Yes, I'm talking about the face paint and masks on the poster above. cool (I don't mind artistic freedom (adding stuff), but when it reaches a certain level I find it to be distracting.)

I decided to skip this one after watching the trailer, it seems to be lacking complexity/ depth (that I painfully missed in https://next-episode.net/cursed too).

The IMDb ratings are astonishingly good though!

What face paint? Oh that face paint, oh well, i wasn't there so i don't mind wink

I'm not that invested in that specific historic event, that i care that much if they do things 100% historical correct but rather if it is entertaining and atleast the first ep so far is wink

Re: Barbarians (2020)

I just watched eps 1. Any one here actually speak Latin or was it just pseudo Latin?  The face paint reminds me of that Arthur film where the barbarians used blue. woad? Its just Goth makeup? ( literally and figuratively)

Re: Barbarians (2020)

I finished it. It's middling. Certainly not bad but I'd not be upset if it didn't get a second season.

Re: Barbarians (2020)

A show that is dying to be made is Boudicca the celtic queen who rebelled against the Romans in Britain. Maybe an epic film. who would be B.? The wonder woman lady?

Re: Barbarians (2020)

well I have now watched the full 6 eps and thought it a decent show with a good battle at the end. I was starting to think from the previous eps that the show  had such a low budget they couldn't afford more than 6 Roman costumes lol I can't see why they would want a season 2. In general a rather nice interpretation & explanation of that terrible real life disaster that changed the Roman empire for ever

Re: Barbarians (2020)

Was pretty decent, nothing groundbreaking but worth a look.

Re: Barbarians (2020)

Varus, give me back my legions!

Actually I thought it was reasonably historically accurate and did well with a fairly limited budget. I enjoyed it, well what good honest Anglo Saxon wouldn't enjoy seeing the bullies of the world get butchered? I'm a bit of an ancient history lover and the Romans loosing something usually cheers me up. Actually historically I rather despise Roman culture for its extreme Patriarchy, casual brutality and its sense of innate superiority. Around 18000 Romans died at Teutoburg, I don't feel sorry for 'em.

There is some evidence that some Germanic tribes or a tribe or segments of tribes fought mostly naked, preferably at night and used black shields whilst dying their bodies black and would use terror tactics where possible. In ancient warfare most casualties happened after the battle was lost, the side that broke first being cut down as they ran after discarding weapon and shield. Hence the old Spartan saying 'come back with this shield or upon it'.

I'm pretty sure I did see what looked like typical stirrups from around the 12th+ century CE on the horses but I would guess that's because people these days can't ride horses safely without them rather than an oversight. When where and how the use of stirrups became common in Western Europe is a matter of some debate. Suffice to say that the horse was domesticated around 4500 BCE and the first evidence for any kind of stirrup is from India in around 100 BCE.

So, no, I don't think the show was taking liberties with the body paint or masks. Your a superstitious society fighting another superstitious society. You understand the use of fear as a weapon. Do the maths.

So yeah, all in all not a bad show. Didn't watch any trailer (I never do, for anything), just dived in and binge watched it. The love triangle was tedious but a solid 3.8/5.

I don't watch trailers. I never have and I never will.
I don't like Tom Cruise, James Cameron and there's lots more to add, give me time
I don't like Star Wars or Star Trek or any superhero *hit

I never heard or read this before. smile

I find trailers quite valuable - it's not a perfect, but a good decision making tool.

tl;dr: this AI sums up research papers in a sentence so you can decide which papers are worth reading; trailers help me to decide where to spend my TV watching time.

You can remove that first line. Just those both lines alone don't make much sense. smile

And "smile" is not the same as smile    cool

Re: Barbarians (2020)

S02 as good as S01 and a nice setup for S03. Imo this is one of the best shows in this genre, not far from GoT action. There is everything - plotting, scheming, betrayal, then double and triple betrayal on top of endless stream of blood. Once you sort out dubbing and subtitles big_smile IMDB this should be rated 8+, the lowest rating is in TikTok generation female group, kinda understandable, 1/3 of dialogs in Latin requires a bit more than 7 seconds attention span smile

Don't care about the historical accuracy, this looks epic and also that actress plays her role perfectly.
