The first three episodes blew me away! I can't wait to see what happens next big_smile

Re: Lovecraft Country [Drama, Fantasy, Horror]

Wow, that was 1x4! Bold choice to use rap for a show from that era (never saw/heard that before IIRC), but it worked! smile The show keeps surprising me again and again... love it!

Spoiler

When they opened the hidden door in the museum, I expected a few book pages to be hidden there, not THAT! yikes big_smile

And WTF... didn't they drive several hours to the museum, only to walk back to Leti's house/elevator underground in half an hour or so? big_smile Or did I miss something? cool

Re: Lovecraft Country [Drama, Fantasy, Horror]

Sorry to those who like this but I think it's very mediocre as a horror tale and the worse HBO show I've ever seen (I've got thru to ep 4). It does have it's moments. Lollie, I totally loved that shot too.

For me the most interesting aspect of it is the race relations and I find the horror aspect to be exceedingly generic (with a small handful of good to great scenes). Nothing we haven't all seen before and the directing is simply average. Some of the dialogue is poor.

As to Lovecraft himself, yes he was a racist. So were lots of people back then and so are lots of people now. But a discussion along those lines is not relevant to this TV show.

I read all of Lovecraft's work in the early 90's and in fact I just checked and I still have all the books! The fact I haven't been tempted to re-read them in all these years is testament to how I feel about them. I enjoyed them at the time, I might be tempted to pick one up and check out a short story or two one day. I don't recall much about them but two things I do remember are The Rats In The Walls and At The Mountains Of Madness. Anyway as far as I can tell this show bears little resemblance to anything Lovecraft actually wrote. And that's fine by me. I don't care about it at all. Just that most of the horror parts are sooooo bland it feels pointless.

Oh and I don't like the integration of modern music into it, it's jarring. One scene you've got someone singing or people listening to music of the era and the next you've got some pop hip hop (or whatever) track playing. It don't work for me. I've seen other shows and films where music is used from a more modern era than the setting and it's worked (the only example I can think of off the top of my head is Britannia) but it just doesn't in this show.

ATM I'd give it a 2/5 but I'll wait to see if I watch it all before giving a final score.

Edit to add one exception to the music, loved the use of Whitey on the Moon and as that was from 1970 it's out of era but that worked for me.

I don't watch trailers. I never have and I never will.
I don't like Tom Cruise, James Cameron and there's lots more to add, give me time
I don't like Star Wars or Star Trek or any superhero *hit

Whitey on the Moon was awesome!

Wow, that's a bad rating!

I'm now watching it as a history and adventure show with some light horror elements to spice things up. Works for me! big_smile

The fifth episode was really well done, and definitely had more horror elements. I really like how they handled the

shapeshifting, and the reveal at the end.

Re: Lovecraft Country [Drama, Fantasy, Horror]

Wow, 1x7 was another great episode! The show went off in another unexpected direction, I like it. smile Found some interesting background info (that made the ep even better in retrospect) on https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radi … ng-delight.

Damn, now I'm tempted to read all of The Guardian's Lovecraft Country: episode by episode recaps! big_smile

@sentient: I agree!

Damn, that ending. Did not see that coming at all. Literally.

Still not entirely sure where this show is headed though...

I'm not sure at all and I don't care! big_smile

The show is so good, it would probably end up being a good episode if the producer said "There's no script this week, do something with pumpkins rolling down a hill towards a lightly forested area." cool

Re: Lovecraft Country [Drama, Fantasy, Horror]

The show is good. They slip a lot of good topics into a proper horror. That Topsy curse was actually pretty freakish as well, I wouldn't want to see them following me around. And the grubby/brutal magic used by basically everyone is a nice touch.

Funny side note: yesterday I had the time to watch a second episode, and decided to finally watch the final s2 ep. of https://next-episode.net/cobra-kai - and it, like LC 1x8, featured Cruel Summer! big_smile

Re: Lovecraft Country [Drama, Fantasy, Horror]

I am amazed at how well this show has done since ep 3! Since then I've gone from 2/5 to a solid 4/5. The stranger it gets, the more interesting it gets! Very glad I kept watching.

I think I didn't make myself clear enough. No matter. I just meant that discussions on whether to use Lovecraft's name in the title was not something that should be discussed on a TV forum. Yes it needs to happen (what we do with our racist ancestors) but just not here. I believe.

Copied from https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radi … ing-finale :

A reasonable query, but who dares question the wisdom of Hippolyta? As she herself said: “It was on Earth 504 and I was there the equivalent of 200 years on this Earth. I could name myself anything, infinite possibilities, that came with infinite wisdom and I’m gonna use of all of it to save my daughter. Now get in the fucking car.”

That was great. smile

Re: Lovecraft Country [Drama, Fantasy, Horror]

Okay, that was the season one finale... I've enjoyed it less than previous episodes, but really hope they'll renew the show! smile

Spoiler

The end felt a bit rushed to me, to understand everything that was going on I had to read https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radi … ull-circle - which explained Ji-Ah's kumiho visions (and also the earlier glowing thing in the Winthrop House basement).

It also connected the book that Dee was reading by torchlight in the car (and the words she read out loud) with her actions later on. smile
