Re: The Expanse

Yeah, the characters sadly becomes even more unlikable at the end. I generally don't like that either, but this show is an exception for me, i don't care much if i like the characters. I just find it exciting, the story, pace and space setting of it all is enough to keep me interested. I can compare it a bit with Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad, i really like those two shows but i do not like the main characters there either, they are interesting but really not very nice people.

Is it worth watching the last episodes?

Not if you're going to base the entire season on it, no! I don't see how the last few episodes are gonna change your mind after making it more than halfway thru the season (6/10) and calling it quits. Although the 9th episode may give you some perspective on what was taking place early on it probably wont matter if you're weren't immersed in the story from the beginning. Personally for me the show really took off from the fourth episode onward. To each their own but I enjoyed the hell out of The Expanse and will be looking forward to the start of season 2 in January. smile

I think my main problem with the show is there is no likable characters for me.

And maybe that's a good thing?!? Honestly speaking this show ain't no fairy tale for the fainthearted, where you can easily distinguish between the white knight and the evil queen dressed in black. This is suppose to be a story about a series of events, not about good versus evil. Most, if not all, of the characters you see throughout the show are just people, flawed and shaped by their circumstances. I don't know about anyone else here but I enjoy watching flawed and even reprehensible people on TV every now and then. The need to constantly have someone to always root for to me has always been a bit overdrawn and overplayed. It's hard trying to be sympathetic with a bunch of people who can turn an entire planet into a ghastly petri dish, while killing sick women AND children without remorse. Makes you wanna reach through the screen and grab some of these cowards by the neck and squeeze til their eyeballs pop out! Some of the characters can touch a nerve or two if you allow it and based on what we've seen so far this season, there's no perfectly good moral person to root for.

SPOILER Show
Miller and Holden represent contrasting aspects of human nature to a degree --Miller has tried desperately to hold on to his humanity and has found that difficult since he has to become a killer when necessary whereas Holden still has much of his humanity in tact. As the novels progress this becomes a problem for Holden after his experience with what happens on the space station in the aftermath. The novels aren't black and white either and when characters have to resort to violence, they do but Holden goes on a bit of a journey there and back again in trying to retain who he is given how the things he is exposed to changes him. It will be interesting to see the television series follow the same series of events.

Re: The Expanse

Yeah I must admit that The Expanse seems to be my favorite scifi show atm. Likely to be the most well-thought-out space combat in any visual entertainment media to this date, no silly fighter screens or loud space explosions etc.  The low gravity elements is very well done and while the characters does indeed seem to be underdeveloped atm then the setting makes up for it imho.

Re: The Expanse

Just watched it. Excellent. Wondering if they're also going to include the Martian reference (Ship called Mark Watney) in the show.

Re: The Expanse

And season 2 is looking better than season 1.

Indeed. Think i'm going to wait for the second season to end before watching further. Another great show for binge-watching. Probably my favorite sci-fi show since Galactica.

Re: The Expanse

Yep, I definitely agree with you on that, when it comes to space opera it's also my favorite since BSG. I'm also going to wait til this season ends to start the binge. Probably will go through season one again and let it lead me straight into the second; also doing the books and I'm currently halfway through Leviathan Wakes. I'm also currently going through past seasons of guilty pleasures before diving into Westworld and the plan is to let that lead me straight into both seasons of The Expanse. Will definitely take my sweet time with both Westworld and the second season of The Expanse to fully absorb and appreciate what has transpired. Back to back quality viewing at its best. smile

Re: The Expanse

Hello everyone!

Nice to hear good comments for The Expanse. I started watching the series from episode 1, and I've seen the first 5 or 6 episodes before getting my hands on the books. They are AWESOME! Unfortunately, after reading all six of them in little under 2 months, the TV show is ruined for me :-(
I've tried to continue watching it, but so many details are off, weird or wrong, I just cant stomach it.

In conclusion, if you guys enjoy reading, chances are you might suffer the same fate as me. Otherwise, have a great time watching the show, and please don't attempt to read the books!

Re: The Expanse

Yeah that's why I'm pacing myself with the books. To each his own but for me I rather watch the television show first and then read the books, so that way I can envision what the characters look and sound like based on their TV counterparts. Weird? Maybe, but it works for me, besides I'm more likely to watch a television show or movie over a book. Main reason why I refuse to read any of the GoT books until after the television series is over and done with. But in regards to The Expanse I probably could've read three or four books by now but chose not to. It's tough because the books are insanely good and are a step above the television show. In general when it comes to just about everything the books are always going to be better. Glad people are enjoying either the show or the books, or both.

I see your point, and I would have probably done the same, but I had slow and limited internet access for a while, so it was impossible to watch the show. I did the similar thing with the Game of Thrones. First season, then the books. Maybe i should be more patient and try to finish the whole show in the future...

Hey whatever works for you but give it a shot and see, and if it doesn't work out for you at least you're enjoying the books. If I would have done it your way I probably would feel the same. The books are the source material for the show and they really expand on the story being told (caught that right lol), and they also allow me to feel a deeper connection with the characters. There are some minor differences with the books and the show but I always tend to separate the two, for me this is especially important as the show drifts further apart from the books. Not much changes in the plot of how events are going but that can change. Of course I still have a lot more reading to do and we both know that this show is a hit and ain't going anywhere anytime soon. The only reason why I got into the books is because a majority of fans were going crazy over the idea of the books coming to life on screen. It definitely piqued my interest in the show but I also wanted to know more...

Like the old saying goes -- if you want to learn more, read the books. smile

Best SF show since BSG and it's trying a few new things e.g. the "farewell"-scene through the doorglass in the previous episode and the general hard SF tone to it like the limbs on asteroids-dwellers. I think I would rank it higher then pretty much every SF show but Firefly and BSG.

Re: The Expanse

Having read the books already, it didn't do anything to diminish my experience watching the TV show.
To each his own I suppose. You can't please everyone so you shouldn't even bother trying.

Re: The Expanse

I've also read the first 5 books and for the most part I like what they've done with the show. I liked that they

SPOILER Show
brought in Avalasalaraaslasrara earlier because she is such a great character

I do think the latter books go way more into Arthur C. Clarke'ish territory and the first few books feel more real, but that didn't prevent me from enjoying them and I hope they keep the show running for a good while.
