Re: Anime
Death Note is ok, the first half was very good. But since they last half was so bad it's hard for me to recommend it to anyone. There is a few good shows, who have "ecchi" elements in it. It does not bother me much if the show still delivers. Oh, and if you can avoid english dubs, please do that, since the japanese voice actors are superb with setting the tone straight. If you enjoyed Attack on Titan and FMA, I'm quite sure you will find Hunter X Hunter at least as good if not like me, 10 times better! http://myanimelist.net/anime/11061/Hunt … ter_(2011) Read the review by Cresherhsm it's spot on. If you want to try out a great comedy with some action/drama/romance I would highly recommend GTO: http://myanimelist.net/anime/245/Great_Teacher_Onizuka

Rwings wrote:Death Note seems to get recommended a lot. I will have to check that one out this weekend. As for Hellsing Ultimate do I need to see Hellsing to understand Ultimate?
No you don't need to see Hellsing to under Hellsing ultimate. Hellsing Ultimate is a remake of the orginal. Also it is 1 hours episodes.

Re: Anime
So I have used the Olympic down time of shows in reruns to check out some more anime and I think I understand the genre's a lot better now. First lesson was the shows on Netflix all suck so it was giving me a really bad impression on the different kinds. Steins Gate is still my favorite though. Just started Mirai Nikki and am really liking it. Would be better if the voice actor playing the main boy was anyone else. The voice makes me want to punch things, but the psycho girlfriend make the show fun to watch.

I'm like 3/4 into Samurai Champloo, it's fun to watch but I don't hold so high like Bebop.

Re: Anime
I wholeheartedly recommend Psycho-Pass to everyone, it's a great scifi/cyberpunk/dystopian series that borrows the basic idea from Minority Report: The story takes place in an authoritarian future dystopia, where omnipresent public sensors continuously scan the Psycho-Pass of every citizen in range. The sensors measure mental state, personality, and the probability that the citizen will commit crimes, alerting authorities when someone exceeds accepted norms. To enforce order, the officers of the Public Safety Bureau carry hand weapons called Dominators. The story follows Akane Tsunemori, Shinya Kogami, and other members of Unit One of the Public Safety Bureau's Criminal Investigation Division, and the crimes they investigate using Dominators. Great characters, writing, story, absolutetly everything. Future classic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxvHhx4vd5Y

First episode showed a lot of promise, thanks for the tip.

Re: Anime
Well I am watching an anime called Mushishi right now. It is a difficult to describe this show.... so I will just copy paste wikipedia The story features ubiquitous creatures called Mushi (蟲?) that often display what appear as supernatural powers. It is implied that there are many more lifeforms more primitive than "normal" living things such as animals, plants, fungi and bacteria, and Mushi is the most primitive of all. Due to their ethereal nature most humans are incapable of perceiving Mushi and are oblivious to their existence, but there are a few who possess the ability to see and interact with Mushi. One such person is Ginko (ギンコ?), the main character of the series. He employs himself as a Mushi master (蟲師 mushi-shi?), traveling from place to place to research Mushi and aid people suffering from problems caused by them. The series is an episodic anthology in which the only common elements among episodes are Ginko and the various types of Mushi. There is no overarching plotline.
It is rather slow paced, not terribly exciting, fantasy, yet feels interesting, realistic and rather thought provoking. It is like a slice-of-life kind of thing with tragedy/near-tragedy in every episode. Kind of Melancholic and peaceful... I can't quite describe it properly, it is rather unlike any show I have ever liked. I would put it into my top 5 favorite anime of all time though (and I used to watch A LOT of anime).

I'm seven episodes into FMA: Brotherhood and I'm really enjoying it, despite some anime mannerisms like silly faces and how the Major sparkles and so on.

Re: Anime
btw guys, what's your take on Neon Genesis: Evangelion? I have a friend who's super into it and he made me watch the entire series and... I found it tedious in terms of storytelling. I know it has 'layers', but the whole Original Sin and religion mumbojumbo just made me snore. I also watched the new movies because of a bet, and they are a bit better than the anime, however they still have that boring feeling to it. I like to say that it has characters that I really, really like, set in a story that I really, really hate.

Well it was one of the first animes I watched and I too was "super into it", although to be fair that was when I wasn't old enough to vote yet so like 10 years ago. All the concepts you mentioned that annoyed you - yeah they have been done to death, but that wasn't the case 20 years ago, it was pretty groundbreaking when it aired. Basically it falls in the same category as Akira "It is a fucking classic STFU!!!" Even though there is waaay better stuff to watch these days. Also being forced to watch something that someone tells you is "amazeballz" will make you automatically start looking for reasons to hate it. Or maybe that is just me . PS: If you are into the giant mecha thing Bokurano jumps to mind. Loved the opening song too.

Re: Anime
I don't hate them because they're "done to death", I just personally find such thing uninteresting. And he also highly recommended TTGL, which I love, and FMA, which I really like, so it's not like that.

I do find them amusing, though, because they are never used in serious situations.

I cannot recommend this enough, such a fantastic story that spans over 60 episodes and never loses its beat and is incredibly consistent, never going for a cheap twist or cliffhanger. Most shows, not anime but in general, should learn from FMA:B how to tell a story.

Rwings wrote:I was only talking about the two films I have seen. Spirit Away and Howling Castle. I don't really remember too much about either just that it made very little sense. I'm not one for abstract meaning though so that might have something to do with it. I'm more straight and to the punch kind of person. Which is why I liked the three Anime I listed off. They were trying to tell a story and focused only on telling that story. There was very little abstract thought to it. I do enjoy both Avatar series, but for some reason because it's American its not considered Anime. I tried to watch the first episode of Kill la Kill...not my cup of tea. I'm not one for comedy which is why I don't watch Adventure Time. AT not a bad show just not something I can sit and watch.
Oh, God, I loved Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, also Kiki's Delivery Service. A family member has the dvd's and I watched them with her and/or the children some years ago. I've probably watched each of them twice over. Otherwise, until just recently I haven't watched anything in-particular, not caring so much for cartoon-type programming in my old age. Not long ago I ran across March Comes in Like a Lion and I thought it looked interesting enough. I found a site, animestreams.net, that has it and I've watched each episode as it was posted except I'm not sure I completely watched the last episode. I think I might have been distracted or too tired or uninterested, or a combination of those. Sketchy memory.
