Topic: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

I wanted to give you guys a quick update on how the new version is fleshing out.

First of all - this is not going to be a free update.

I'm still figuring out the details of how I'm going to implement this, but ideally - the app will turn into a free ad-supported one, with in-app purchase (to unlock some functionality and remove ads).

Current users of the app will get the existing functionality (with no ads) - but will have to pay (a discounted amount) for the new features.

The app was out and supported for more than 4 years now (with most of the sales occurring in it's first year). I'm sure some people will be pissed at having to pay for new features, but I hope they'll understand.

Now the new and updated stuff:

1) iPhone 6/6+ Support - the app now looks good on all iPhone sizes

2) Today's Widget

Tapping on any of these opens the corresponding show in the app.

3) Push notifications

Those will configurable, and can be turned on for:

a) New episodes in stuff to watch (Episodes in the app) - all or only season pilots
b) When a show gets a premiere date - any season or only pilots
c) When a show is canceled/ended

4) Discover New Shows (Top Charts)

Added "Upcoming" and "From My Creators" to the top charts. Those work pretty much the same as the site top charts.
All charts lists now include the channel name as well as the show genre.

This is for example Hot Shows:

You'll be able to swipe to hide shows from those lists (and restore them later from settings).

5) Show Details additions

Show details now include "Status" (Canceled/Ended, Running, Returning, In Development etc.), year in which the show premiered, and show creator.

When tapped, show creator opens a list of other show created by the same person.

There are various other tweaks and improvements throughout the app.

I'm 90% done with all of the above, and hopefully will be able to release the app in the upcoming 1-2 weeks. Mostly I need to polish it and test it on various devices and screen configurations.

Please let me know of any thoughts / comments / suggestions and requests that you have. Now's the time for those smile

Cheers!

Re: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

How will it look on the iPad? It'll scale like before? Because that's basically the only thing I'd want more, an iPad layout.

4 years, has it really been that long.!  Wow.

Re: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

The iPhone app was never meant to be run on an iPad. It can, but it's not optimized for that.

I've been planning a proper iPad version for quite a while now and hopefully I'll be able to realize it soon.

I'm sorry for the delay - I know I've been promising this forever, but I'm alone in developing everything Next Episode and I don't want to do it half-assed.

iPad optimized version is coming though.

Re: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

How will you charge us? Will you release this as a new new app in the app store (and remove the old one?) or will you release an update with an in-app purchase? Or are you able to charge money for the update itself? Will the update be available for free for my family in family sharing?

Re: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

I've written above how it will work ideally, but I have not yet implemented it so I can't really go into more details.

When it's finished and I have more visibility about what's possible and what not - I'll explain it along with the app announcement.

Re: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

Looking very good!!! I tried all the other TV show apps for iOS and they've all been really lackluster... finally coming around to buying this when you release it! smile

Some suggestions (can't tell from the screencaps):

[1] for the widget, the ability to view past shows beyond just 'yesterday' (either selectable from within the app, or more than just one day, if that's how it'll be implemented) ... all other tabs seem like they are present/future

[2] similar to the above comment, within the app itself, the ability to view past shows that have aired (for XX amount of days)

[3] providing an IAP to upgrade to premium member status on the website itself wouldn't be so bad, if that's allowed

[4] a nice touch would be access to a mobile-rendered version of the forums inside the app

[5] ability to configure when local push notifications happen for episode air times (for instance, 30 minutes before a show airs in local time)

all are super minor gripes/comments... great work so far!!!

Re: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

The widget looks great!

Is there or can there be Twitter integration either from the site or from the iOS app?  I'm thinking the ability to Tweet the fact you have just watched a show.

If from the app, perhaps a setting would allow you to switch on that a Tweet will be sent to your account when you mark an episode as watched.  The tweet would include a statement that a show (name as hashtag) had been watched and a note of the season/episode number and perhaps a 'using next-episode' element as branding for the app/service

If controlled by the site, perhaps a setting for premium members which would allow the site when it updates with watched information to send a similar Tweet out?

Is it just me, or why the hell would anyone care that you just watched something.
Maybe I am too old, but I don't get all this twitter crap.

Um, kinda in the same way some might ask why would you want to discuss a show on a Forum; same thing smile

Not really - on a forum you can have a proper discussion with lots of people. Twitter is a one-way limited communication

Re: Next Episode 3.0 for the iPhone

Since there is no mention about this update for Android, i assume there won't be one?
